Schools Provision

Our school-based provision includes whole class, small group and individual instrumental and vocal tuition for Key Stage 2 pupils in Bexley’s primary schools:

First Access
Whole class instrumental tuition, provided free of charge to pupils, usually at Year 4.  Across the borough, instruments offered are violin, viola, recorder, clarinet, trumpet, baritone, ukulele, guitar, djembe (African drumming) and samba (Brazilian percussion).

Progression 1
Following on from First Access, a broad range of small group and individual peripatetic instrumental tuition is available in schools – lessons are taught by visiting Bird College tutors on; strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), brass (cornet, trumpet, tenor horn, baritone, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba), woodwind (flue, clarinet, oboe, bassoon) and percussion. All lessons take place during school time and are subsidised by Bird College through a grant from Arts Council England.

Progression 2
The Music Service provides music practitioners to run instrumental and vocal clubs, orchestras and choirs during lunchtime and after school. Clubs are often an extension or progression opportunity for First Access pupils, using their First Access instrument, whilst orchestras bring together First Access and Progression 1 pupils in a mixed ensemble.
