Life at Bird College

A suburban-central area with a thriving student population, Bird College is situated five minutes walking distance from Sidcup Rail Station and therefore enjoys 30 minute regular connections to the centre of London and London’s West End.

Bluewater shopping centre is only 20 minutes drive and local Greenwich boasts a fantastic student social scene and nightlife – all of which are accessible through a reliable public transport service.

Located within a thriving student scene, Rose Bruford College is within easy walking distance and the Avery Hill Campus (which accommodates many first year students) is only a ten minute drive away.

The local high street boasts many amenities including banks, cafes (such a Cafe Nero and Costa Café), supermarkets (Waitrose and Morrison’s), hair salons and a local library. The College is also situated five minutes drive from Queen Mary’s Hospital and corporate discount membership for the local leisure centre (which includes a gym, swimming pool and fitness studio) is available to Bird College students.

The Campus

The College moved to a single site campus in Alma Road, Sidcup at the end of 2015. The building was previously an adult education centre, and was completely refurbished to our specification to provide studios, teaching rooms, a theatre and all the other facilities that our students need.

The College offers a relaxed and professionally disciplined environment with students working flexibly every weekday and attending specialist workshops and rehearsals on some weekends. Technical classes are organised so that students of the same standard may study together, even if in a different year. Male students have separate Ballet, Modern and Singing classes augmented with weight training.

Choreographic potential is encouraged during weekly workshops and classes and is rewarded through participation in events such as the prestigious ‘Dancing Times Cup for Choreography’.

Second and third year students have the opportunity to study for additional examinations and qualifications at weekends and during holiday periods. These include ISTD Majors (up to Advanced) and the ISTD Associate Diploma in Tap and Modern Theatre Branch.

A level Qualifications
There are opportunities for students to take A level qualifications alongside their course. This is through Bexley Adult Education and the college is happy to try and adjust timetables to make this possible.

Musical Instrument Tuition
The college is also able to offer musical instrument tuition. Students can continue with instrument tuition or are able to take up a new instrument should they wish.

‘Choosing to train at Bird College was definitely the best decision for me. I love the friendly atmosphere it exudes and the high standard of training that challenges us. When I leave Bird I’m confident in knowing that I will be well-equipped for my career thanks to such a dedicated teaching staff.’
