“Being able to study for this qualification alongside my full-time programme was one of the reasons I chose Bird College”
Second Year Student
Level 3 Diploma in Dance Instruction
The DDI (Imperial Society for Teachers of dance) is aimed at anyone 17 years or older who wishes to begin training as a dance teacher. Bird College offers the DDI in Modern, Tap and Ballet as extra curricular classes to those students who are taking the Degree or Diploma courses. This intensive course runs throughout the Christmas, Easter and half term holidays and is led by one of the ISTD’s top examiners. Students will also be required to observe classes in Bird Junior School and attend individual tutorials.
The DDI is broken down into four units. Two units are generic and cover teaching skills with a focus on teaching observation and safe dance practice. The other two units are dance genre specific and focus on technical, performance based and musical knowledge required at this level both through personal performance and that of pupils of various levels.
Why do I need a teaching qualification?
A lot of performing Artists also engage in teaching during and after their performing careers. In the world today it is almost impossible to acquire a teaching career without a qualification. An accredited initial teaching qualification not only makes you much more employable, but fully prepares you for the day when you might open your own dance school.
What is the next step after DDI?
The DDI is the foundation for the Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE).
The DDE enables students who have achieved their Level 3 DDI the opportunity to complete their training and become a fully qualified and accredited ISTD dance teacher.
Is the Qualification recognised?
Both the DDI and DDE are accredited by the Regulatory Bodies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Ofqual, DCELLS, CCEA),are on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and award 68 and 92 QCF credits accordingly. This means that, as well as standing alone as respected dance teaching qualifications that give you the opportunity to teach across a wide variety of dance genres, they can contribute towards other higher level qualifications.
