Olivier Award winner 2016

The Olivier Awards 2016 returned to the stunning surroundings of Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House on Sunday 3 April for an incredible evening hosted by musical theatre legend Michael Ball. Michael said that the stage was leading the way over the film industry following the controversy over the lack of ethnic minority nominees in this year’s Oscars.

In this 40th anniversary ceremony Gypsy collected four awards, including Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Bird College graduate and Patron, Lara Pulver. Best Actress in a Musical is an annual award presented by The Society of London Theatre in recognition of achievements in commercial British theatre. The Olivier Awards are the most prestigious theatrical awards in theUK and the equivalent of the US Tony Awards.

Lara took to Twitter to express her excitement: ‘Thrilling to be back on a stage alongside Imelda Staunton. Team Gypsy reunited!’

Graduate Lara  is best known for her portrayals of Erin Watts in the popular BBC spy drama Spooks and Irene Adler in BBC’s TV adaptation Sherlock for which she received a nomination for Critic’s Choice Television Award for Best Movie/Mini Series Actress in 2012.

It has recently been revealed that Lara is to star alongside Dominic Cooper, in the role of Ann O’Neill in Sky Atlantic’s new series Fleming, which is based upon the life of the James Bond author.

Lara was also nominated for the 2008 Olivier Award  for Best Actress in a Musical for the role of Lucille Frank in the first West End production of the musical Parade at the Donmar Warehouse. She reprised the role in the Los Angeles production at the Mark Taper Forum.

In 2009, Lara joined the cast of BBC TV series Robin Hood and in 2010 she joined the cast of the third series of HBO’s True Blood as Sookie Stackhouse’s fairy godmother, Claudine Crane.

Most recently, Lara has appeared in Fox’s TV series Da Vinci’s Demons as Clarice Orsini and is billed to appear as Karen Lord in 2014 Sci-Fi Action Blockbuster Edge of tomorrow, alongside Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
